Q: When will construction on this project begin?
A: Construction is scheduled to begin in late January 2015. Please see the Schedule for more details.
Q: When will this project be completed?
A: All proposed lanes will be open to traffic by the end of 2016.
Q: Why is this work taking place?
A: Construction of the Washington Street Underpass will remove the current Washington Street at-grade railroad crossing which will alleviate congestion and improve safety.
Q: How will construction of this project affect my commute?
A: The project will be built in several stages to minimize the impact on the traveling public. Intermittent and daily lane closures can be expected. Please check back weekly for progress and construction updates.
Q: How can I submit a comment or question?
A: Please visit our Project Contacts page.
Q: There had been talk (at a Village meeting) of Metra looping their entrance match up to the Haryan Farm subdivision entrance. Any hope of this happening and getting traffic signals installed?
A: A traffic signal currently is not proposed as part of this project. If the property to the north of Haryan Farms is developed in the future, there is the potential that the access to this parcel and the train station could line up with the existing Haryan Way. Depending on what is developed on this property, a traffic signal could be installed at this intersection in the future if the traffic signal warrants are met.
Q: Does the railroad pay a certain amount for the project?
A: The exact amount will be final when construction has concluded. The Canadian National Railroad is contributing 100% of the cost to widen the abutments and retaining wall to accommodate a future railroad track. They are also participating in some of the other costs related to the project. A significant amount of federal funding was also secured by the County to help offset the costs of constructing this underpass.
